Phobia or Fear of Hospitals

I never realized that there were people with a phobia of hospitals. Sure, we all hate going to them, but a phobia? I first became aware of this fear after a friend of mine sliced his hand at school. Although he was bleeding profusely he refused medical attention, getting violent with me when I attempted to press him. I eventually enlisted the help of a few of our
dorm mates to literally drag him down to the campus clinic.

As we neared the building, my friend began to hyperventilate and plead with us to not make him go. He argued that his five-inch gash "wasn't serious" and that "he was fine." Once he was inside the building, he passed out. I guess this was a good thing, since he was able to get stitched up but it really tripped me out.

Nosocomephobia is the abnormal fear of hospitals and can lead sufferers to refuse medical attention even when it is most needed. It seems to be a rare disorder, but due to its nature it is hard to find hard statistical facts about it.I decided to look a little deeper into the problem, this is a friend of mine after all and I was pretty shaken up by the whole ordeal. There are two common treatments in use today: hypnotherapy and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).

Hypnotherapy is advertised as an easy, efficient and pain-free solution to this and many other phobias. You visit a hypnotist who then puts you into a deep trance to interact with you on a sub-conscious level. This can often reveal the root cause of fears and then those causes can be adjusted to allow you to live without fear.

NLP takes a holistic approach to our interactions with the world; addressing how we perceive (neural), describe (linguistic) and take action on (programming) ourselves and our environment. It is purportedly safe, fast, long-lasting and has been touted as a great leap forward for mankind's understanding of itself.
